Be the One to get it Done! VOLUNTEER!

Volunteers are people that take action! Become an active volunteer with Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. Choose to make a difference in your community by giving your time and talents in service. We have opportunities for individuals, families, and groups. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve on a one-time project.

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities for you to choose from:

Center Assistant

Assist with recreation activities at one of our community centers. Provide help with homework during the after-school program from 3:00pm–6:00pm weekdays during the school year. Summer programs need assistance too. This is a great opportunity to interact with youth in a recreational environment.

Educational Speaker | Class Instructor

If you have special subject knowledge or a skill that you are able to share or teach, we are interested in talking to you about your interests.

Event Volunteer

Assist with the Parks & Recreation special events for set-up, break-down, event activities, and other roles as needed. Some of our special events include: Movies in the Park, Glow Ride, Haunted Trail, Veteran’s Lunch, and Celebration of Lights.

Group Project

If you are part of a group and looking for a way to serve the community, call to ask about our project needs. Most of these are one-time projects.

Nature Zone Volunteer and/or Animal Feeder

Do you like a variety of animals and want to learn more about them? Expand your knowledge by becoming a Nature Zone animal feeder. Training by the Nature Zone staff is needed. These positions are better for volunteers wanting an ongoing opportunity, usually a one day per week commitment. Families often enjoy working together on this project. You must be 16 or older to serve on your own. For skilled volunteers there are a few opportunities to assist with programs or help with Nature Zone public hours.

Park and Trail Stewards  |  Groups, Individuals, and Families

If you enjoy spending time in our City’s 17 parks and on our 40 miles of trails, you may want to join the team of Park and Trail Stewards. Volunteering as a Park and Trail Steward allows you to be outside, enjoy nature, and exercise while giving back to the community to help keep outdoor spaces free of litter. You can adopt a park or trail section, serve on a one-time cleanup, or explore our many parks and trails to cleanup a variety of areas. At times gardens need maintenance too. Parks and Recreation provides all of the training and equipment for this rewarding program. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for information on how to get started and receive orientation.

Photographer

We are always in need of experienced photographers serving at events and programs to add quality photos to our collection. If you have skills in videography and editing we can use you too.

Youth Basketball Coaches

Coaches and Assistant Coaches are needed for Youth Basketball from December–March.
