Riverfront Park is located near the river in downtown Lynchburg, and includes a large open field suitable for festivals and other special events. The park connects to the Riverwalk trail along its northern edge. Riverwalk leads to Percival’s Island in the James River, and parking is available on nearby streets. The level ground near the river is ideal for an easy stroll or bike ride.

Recent renovations to Riverfront Park include several boardwalks, rain gardens with native wildlife plantings, benches, new shade trees, and a stage area for events. A zero-depth fountain is open seasonally near the stage area for young and old to enjoy.

History

Riverfront Park reopened on May 22, 2010, after completion the first phase of park revitalization. These improvements included rain gardens, a zero depth fountain, walkways, lighting, and more. The budget for this phase of the project came in at $2.6 million. Development of the park has been slowed by several large utility projects which must be completed before additional phases of the park can be built out. However, both municipal and private development continues along the downtown riverfront and positive changes can be seen almost daily.
