Modern dance is an American dance form started in the early 1900’s that uses ballet steps, but is more fluid and free. Dancers are barefoot and individual expression and creativity is encouraged. Students will learn ballet steps and positions, but dance them in a modern dance style based on the technique of Merce Cunningham, an early American modern dance pioneer. Students dance barefoot and can wear footless tights/leggings and either a leotard or t-shirt. Hair should be secured so it is not a distraction while dancing. Register 3 days in advance.
Stacy began dancing at the Floyd Ward School of Dance here in Lynchburg and then continued at Forest Dance Academy. After graduating from William and Mary, Stacy moved to NYC where she danced professionally for the next twelve years. She studied with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and was an understudy and a teacher at the studio. She also danced with Saeko Ichinohe, Anita Cheng, Mary Siedman and others. After moving back to Lynchburg, Stacy taught modern dance at The Dance Theater of Lynchburg and Lynchburg Parks and Rec. Stacy currently performs with Kuumba Dance Ensemble.
