Volunteers are people that take action! Call the Volunteer Coordinator at (434) 455-5886 to become an active volunteer with Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. Choose to make a difference in your community by giving your time and talents in service. We have opportunities for individuals, families, and groups. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve on a one-time project.
We have a variety of volunteer opportunities for you to choose from:
Adopt-A-Trail Groups, Individuals, and Families
If you enjoy spending time on the nearly 25 miles of trails in the city, consider spending some of your trail time volunteering. Become an Adopt-A-Trail volunteer to get outside, enjoy nature, exercise, and help keep the trails free of litter. Adopting a section of trail is fun and easy! Parks and Recreation provides all of the training and equipment for this rewarding program. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for information on how to get started and receive orientation.
After-School Program Tutor
A great opportunity to interact with youth and support them in their education at one of our community centers.
Educational Speaker / Class Instructor
If you have special subject knowledge or a skill that you are able to share or teach, we are interested in talking to you about your interests.
If you are part of a group and looking for a way to serve the community, call to ask about our project needs. Most of these are one-time projects.
Nature Zone Volunteer and/or Animal Feeder
Training by the Nature Zone staff is needed. These positions are better for volunteers wanting an ongoing opportunity. Learn about the Nature Zone and be able to answer questions from the public. For a more hands on experience learn to feed the Nature Zone animals. Families often enjoy working together on this project. You must be 16 or older to serve on your own.
We are always in need of experienced photographers to add to our photo collection at events and activities.
Assist with recreation activities during the after school program from the hours of 3:00pm–6:00pm during the school year or other hours during summer camp. Additional opportunities exist with other recreation and sport activities too.
Special Event Volunteer
Assist with the Parks & Recreation special events for set-up, break-down, sales, and other roles as needed. Some of our special events include our Movie in the Park! event and Get Downtown!
Youth Basketball and Girls Softball Coaches
In need of Coaches and Assistant Coaches for Girls and Boys Basketball in the fall and Girls Softball in the spring.
