This introductory workshop will cover all the basics to help you feel prepared embracing the backcountry. Topics covered will include clothing, gear, food, filtration systems, emergency supplies, shelter, and free local trails. This is also an opportunity to meet people and connect with other outdoor enthusiasts in the area. Participants are welcome to bring gear they want to share or learn more about. Courtesy advance registration is appreciated.

Meet the InstructorJosh Hinkle

Josh “RainGear” Hinkle has been backpacking for over 10 years and living in Lynchburg almost entirely. Josh’s accomplishments include hiking the entire 2181 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 2011, covering 2301 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2015, and completed the James River Batteau Festival several times. His other hobbies include biking around town, paddle boarding, running, and training at the Y when not eating Ramen in the woods.
